Mulan - Lake Gregory

P1000945 In the night sailed past the Tanami Road just 2 cars. Both probably drove by Billiluna to Balgo. We started the morning on the way to Balgo. Since the road was quite rough and occasionally the middle of it a termite tribe decided to expand its residential realm, we only drove at 40 km / h. Once in Balgo we investigated the gas station. When was this store, crammed into bars. The store opening times were written to Sunday 9 am to 11 am It was 8.15 clock and so we decided to by 9 clock in front of the shop that looked like a factory floor to wait. At 9 clock but nothing happened. So we took a round through the village again and saw a white man the entrance of the village. We asked for the shop and he said that on Sunday there is nothing. He asked about our plan and we told him that we wanted to camp on the lake. He said that he was a week ago and since the water level was quite low. However, it was beautiful there. Half a tank of fuel should be enough and even after further discussions on the Aboriginal Comunity he said, we could fill up the empty water tank with him yet. This we did and even then it took us before to show where we can find the Art Gallery, which would fly because of extra tourists in this village.

Then we set off for Mulan. Also, this was back in rhinestones bumpy condition. An hour later we arrived in Mulan and also found the same office. But of course it was closed and sat opposite the Aboriginal service. A building made of corrugated iron roof, with a wise and open pile cross symbolized the house of God. We heard more but that they also sang local songs. Photos are in the villages unfortunately prohibited.

P1000962 We knew that we must organize in Mulan a permit for wild camping. The area around the lake back in 2001 by "hand out" of the government to the Aboriginal people. The area around the lake to camp but can also be use when you pay a small fee to the municipality. The ancestors once lived around the lake and the following story:

Once upon a time there was a star that wandered from east to west, Switzerland with a long down here. His name was "Kiki". His dust spread everywhere. From the star was a tree. The tree is sacred and never moves. He is still there, and the offspring were careful to this country. When the whites came they said that the land belongs to nobody. But that's not true because we've taken care of the land.

P1000949 As we sat in the car in front of the office and wondering what to do next, a native came with the car and told us that tomorrow we could get the permit for the wild camping. You manage this and they could come visit us in the afternoon, so we go out there not lost. We were glad we realized that this was just the woman who had spoken of in Mark Hall Creek. You know after the first glance, the man known as the mother of her son. You should just meet her openly. We consented, and went out of course. The road was only a single track railway from sand and we wondered whether we were on the right track. But suddenly came the saving sign. The place was quite far away from the lake. The area looked really great and wild horses we had seen from the car too.

P1000953 We got out and what is now happening is hard to describe. Within 10 seconds, we were swarmed by hundreds of flies that did not stop in front of ears, nose, mouth and eyes. With the hand profitable wag nothing, run nothing availed. Escape into the camper behind availed as little as they simply swarmed. After another ten minutes we were close to madness. We had only one option, namely to get into the car front, window a crack and on the highest fan speed. After 5 minutes we had locked out the pests. We had no choice but to read than in the front car. Somewhere there was a white jeep, with the wife of her husband and three of her children. She got out, we did it right, and her first issue we had, because the situation repeated. Wagging, we exchanged a few words and she said she would also be presented not as bad a walk and show area was thus nothing. Instead, they lit a fire, and asked us what we love, could smoke or flies. The answer was obvious and so we stood in the smoke of the fire, which were covered with green boughs of the trees. It was the redemption. Once we got into the wind the smoke was not only fly to feel more. It's like if you were flipping a switch.

P1000954 So we could still talk without interruption and they gave us a few tips. To avoid importing we should leave our camper on sandy soil, so you might see snakes in the night. The man pushed us to the two branches waving in the hand and said goodbye. Tomorrow morning we will simply come to the office for the permit. If a storm comes and the streets were impassable, she would look after us. What a comforting feeling.

Once it got dark, the flies were gone and I could headlamp wonderful cook. With a few copies we had banished the outside in the camper. The last thing that was bothering us that evening was the heat. To sleep, we can moisten our towels again with water. I then think about with a wet cloth and was used to sleep quite quickly at the full moon at 20.30 clock.
