Highlands, northeast, southeast and south coast
We decided that two weeks from the second July to 16 July 2005, to explore with a rented camper Dodge RAM 1500, the island of fire and ice. The 4 × 4 is the only campers at budget, so you can drive through the highlands. It glowed in the course of our journey also because it coarse gravel, lava fields and river crossings (rivers, which run through the streets) are posted on the band. But that makes the whole course, even more adventurous. Iceland has, although it is far to the north near the Arctic Circle, relatively mild temperatures in the summer. However, the summer is about 3 months growing season is very short. Also, it is never dark at this time. The sun went below the horizon around midnight and arrived a little later reappeared.
Iceland is located exactly on the zone where the North American Eurasian plate drifts away from the ocean. As a result, it always comes back to the island to volcanic eruptions and tremors. There are about 30 active volcanoes that could erupt again at any time. About a third of the world's lava over the past 500 years came to Iceland. Therefore, the island is also almost entirely of rocks such as basalt, tuff and lava. The island has about 290,000 inhabitants, of which, more than half of the Greater Reykjavik. As so often in the north, it is also in favor of Iceland Swiss relations expensive. Cook for themselves with a saving of a lot if you do not buy at a gas station. Even the petrol strikes with more than SFr. 2 - (and a 3.7 liter engine of 20 liters per 100 km consumption) is a big hole in the wallet.
Iceland is also the land of trolls, elves and other spirits of nature. Anyway, it is the only country I know that these phenomena nationally recognized. Thus, not just planned a new road through a green hill before is not clear, whether it elves live. If so, is built around it, or encouraged the elves to find another dwelling. However, this can take years. In Reykjavik, there is even an elf school, where you can learn all that.
And now for our route:
We landed at Keflavik airport and have moved directly to our campers. Then went the route as shown on the plan.
